Type your business type and town into ChatGPT, something like “best plumber in Huntingdon Valley” or “family dentist near Abington”, and your name is not in the answer. Yet the same business shows up fine on Google Maps. If that sounds familiar, you are not imagining it, and it is rarely bad luck. When a business is not showing up in ChatGPT answers, the cause is usually one of a short list of specific, checkable problems. This guide walks through each one, what the AI companies themselves say about it, and what to fix first.

If you want a quick read on where your business stands before going through the list, our free AI visibility scan checks how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI features describe your business today.

How ChatGPT Finds Local Businesses

ChatGPT answers come from two places. The first is what the underlying large language model learned in training, which is a snapshot of the web from some point in the past. The second is live search: when a question needs current or local information, ChatGPT can search the web and cite the pages it pulls from. Perplexity works the same way, and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are built on top of Google Search itself.

That second path is the one a local business can influence. If ChatGPT search cannot reach your website, or the pages it reaches do not state clearly what you do and where, the answer is built from other sources: directories, review sites, and competitors whose pages are easier to read.

Reason 1: Your Website May Be Blocking ChatGPT’s Search Crawler

This is the most mechanical cause and the fastest to check. OpenAI runs a crawler called OAI-SearchBot that collects pages for ChatGPT’s search features. In its own documentation, OpenAI states that “sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links,” and it recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt file (OpenAI, Overview of OpenAI crawlers).

How to Check Whether You Are Blocking It

Some security plugins, hosting firewalls, and “block AI bots” settings shut out every AI crawler at once, often without the owner knowing. OpenAI treats its crawlers separately: blocking GPTBot, the crawler used for model training, is a different setting from blocking OAI-SearchBot. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt, look for any line that disallows OAI-SearchBot or all bots, and ask whoever manages your hosting whether a firewall rule blocks AI user agents.

Reason 2: Your Business Facts Do Not Match Across the Web

AI tools build an answer by pulling facts from several sources and comparing them. If your business name, address, phone number, or hours read one way on your website, another way on your Google Business Profile, and a third way on an old directory listing, the tool has conflicting facts to reconcile. A system trying to avoid a wrong answer is more likely to leave you out than to guess.

This usually is not anyone’s fault. Years of directory sign-ups, a move, a new phone number, or an old partner’s listing leave a trail of slightly different versions of the same business. Cleaning it up is unglamorous, but it is the foundation: start with a complete and accurate Google Business Profile, then bring every directory listing in line with it.

Reason 3: Your Pages Do Not State Clear Facts

A human visitor can read between the lines of “quality service you can trust.” A machine pulling a fact to repeat cannot. Pages that say plainly what you do, where you do it, who it is for, and what it costs give AI tools something concrete to cite. Vague, slogan-heavy pages give them nothing.

Practical Fixes for Clearer Pages

Practical fixes:

  • One service per page, with the service and the towns you serve in the heading.
  • Short, direct answers to the questions customers actually ask, written as an FAQ.
  • Your business name, address, and phone number in the same format on every page.
  • Structured data (Schema.org markup) that labels your business type, location, and services in a form machines read reliably.

What Google Says About AI Overviews

Google says something worth noting here: there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary,” and the fundamentals of good SEO still apply (Google Search Central, AI features and your website). In other words, the same clear, well-built site that ranks in Google is the starting point for AI answers too. Our local SEO services cover that groundwork.

Reason 4: Few Trusted Sources Mention You

When an AI tool searches the web for “best roofer in Bucks County,” it reads the pages that rank for that kind of question: review sites, local news, chamber of commerce directories, “best of” roundups, and industry associations. If your business is missing from those sources, the answer gets built from the businesses that are on them.

This is less about link counts and more about being present, consistently, on the sites an AI tool is likely to read. Google describes the same idea for local results: prominence is “based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have” (Google Business Profile Help, local ranking). Our off-page SEO work focuses on exactly these mentions.

Reason 5: Your Reviews Are Thin or Old

Reviews are one of the few signals both people and machines can read at a glance. Google’s own guidance says that “more reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking” (Google Business Profile Help), and review sites are among the pages AI search tools pull from. A profile with a handful of reviews from three years ago tells a very different story than one with steady, recent, detailed reviews that the owner responds to.

Turn Reviews Into a Routine

The fix is a system, not a one-time push: ask every satisfied customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to what comes in. Automated review requests by text and email are part of our reputation management service for this reason.

Reason 6: Nobody Is Checking What AI Tools Say About You

Most owners are running the business, not monitoring AI answers, and that is reasonable. But it means problems sit unnoticed: a robots.txt change during a website update, an old address resurfacing on a directory, or a competitor whose new service pages now answer the question better. AI visibility is maintenance, much like keeping a Google Business Profile current. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google the same few questions your customers ask, once a month, and write down who gets named.

What to Fix First

If you only have an hour, work through this order. Each step is quick to check and makes the next one worth more:

  1. Check robots.txt and any firewall setting for blocked AI crawlers, especially OAI-SearchBot.
  2. Make your Google Business Profile complete and accurate, then match your website to it.
  3. Fix your name, address, and phone number on the top directory listings.
  4. Rewrite your main service page so it states the service, the towns, and the answers to common questions plainly.
  5. Start a steady review request routine.
  6. Ask the AI tools about your business monthly and track who they name.
Timeline chart: month 1 fix the facts (Google Business Profile, NAP consistency, robots.txt access), month 2 early wins (structured FAQ and service pages, review requests), months 3 to 6 meaningful results

In our standard program, those first fixes (Google Business Profile corrections, consistent business facts, crawler access) happen in month 1, early visibility wins show by month 2, and meaningful results build over months 3 to 6. Whoever does the work, ask for that timeline in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my business show up on Google but not in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT builds answers from its training data and, for current or local questions, from live web search. If its search crawler cannot reach your site, or your business facts conflict across sources, it may name other businesses even when you rank on Google.

Can my website block ChatGPT without me knowing?

Yes. OpenAI says sites that opt out of its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Robots.txt rules, security plugins, and hosting firewalls that block AI bots can all do this, so check them first.

Is AI search optimization different from regular SEO?

They overlap heavily. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in its AI Overviews beyond SEO fundamentals. The extra work for AI tools is mostly crawler access, consistent business facts across the web, and pages that state clear facts.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI answers?

It is one of the most visible sources of local business facts, and Google uses it for local results. Keeping it complete and matching your website removes conflicting facts that can lead AI tools to leave you out.

How long does it take to start showing up in AI answers?

In the AIG Web Methods program, the first fixes happen in month 1, early wins show by month 2, and meaningful results build over months 3 to 6. A blocked crawler can be fixed in a day, but trust signals like reviews and mentions take longer.
